Kongō-Gumi Co., Ltd. was established in 578 when a member of the Kongō family decided to open his own construction company. Prince Sho-toku had brought this individual from Korean to Japan in order to build Shitenno--ji, a Buddhist temple. The family business operated until 2006 when it was taken over by a larger construction company mdash; 1,328 years after it was founded.
